Complicated Technology
Many water feature owners experience the frustration of maintenance issues caused by turnover, workload, inadequate training, a lack of certification, and complicated technology. From my own experience, I have come to believe in a more minimalist approach to water feature design that keeps it simple and ensures the longevity of the owner’s investment.
High Turnover Rate
One of the biggest challenges with water feature maintenance is the high turnover rate among maintenance personnel. It is hard to keep employees in this position for more than a few years, which is why it is important to maintain detailed operation and maintenance manuals, including manufacturer's equipment data and instructional training videos, to ensure that each new hire has the resources they need to succeed.
Workload
Another issue is workload, as most maintenance personnel are already busy with other building maintenance tasks. They often lack the time and, understandably, a positive attitude to address the water feature properly.
Training
Training is essential to the success of any water feature maintenance program. Maintenance staff may get some training immediately upon the fountain’s completion, but it is usually inadequate. Hands-on training instills knowledge and confidence so that maintenance staff is better equipped to handle any issues that arise.
Certification
Certification is another important factor in water feature maintenance, as many jurisdictions require it for handling liquid chemicals such as chlorine, acid, or other hazardous systems. This is an investment some owners and managers are unwilling to make; if they do, the now-certified maintenance personnel will demand a larger salary. If the maintenance staff does not get a larger salary, they move on, resulting in more turnover. I have known some of these systems to be taken offline because of this "catch-22" situation for the owners and managers.
Complicated Technology
Finally, complicated technology can be a major source of frustration for maintenance personnel. That is why, in most cases, a focus on simplicity in water feature design and technology that is easy to operate and maintain is vital. This approach ensures that fountains will last for decades and remain an asset for the property.
In short, I believe in keeping it simple when it comes to most water feature designs, as they directly relate to maintenance. By providing comprehensive resources, hands-on training, and easy-to-use technology, the longevity and value of the owner’s investment are better assured.
